Cull buck mounts are coveted by antique collectors due to their rarity and distinctive appearance. Trophy hunters consider them inferior, targeting cull bucks for removal from the herd to improve the overall antler quality of the deer population. The less desirable genetics are "culled" out through selective hunting. This practice is most often used on large properties managed by trophy hunters where only bucks with ‘high-quality’ antlers are acceptable.
