Cull buck mounts are considered desirable by collectors due to their rarity, and distinct appearance. To those hunting for trophies, a "cull buck" is considered to have inferior antler quality compared to other bucks, and is generally targeted to be removed from the herd to improve the overall antler quality of the deer population through selective hunting, essentially "culling" out the less desirable genetics; this practice is often used on large properties managed for trophy hunting where only bucks with what hunters consider to be ‘high-quality’ antlers are desired.
